On Monday, Trump tweeted from the Philippines, where he is meeting with possibly one of the worse president on human rights today. Trump wants great trade deals, so the human rights of people being systematically murdered in another country means very little.
The president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, made jokes with Trump over the weekend about the press pool being full of “spies.” While the two laughed, that joke was not at all lighthearted or funny. Duterte has threatened reporters who write negative stories about Duterte, who has bragged publicly since becoming president that he committed his first murder at just 16 years old, telling them that “just because you’re a journalist, you are not exempted from assassination, if you’re a song of a b*tch.”
This is the man currently meeting with Trump on trade, meetings Trump calls “great” while Philippino citizens are murdered outside in Rodrigo’s “drug war,” which he has implemented in order to commit state-sanctioned murders. Trump has still said nothing negative about Rodrigo’s abuses of his people. He’ll insult prisoners of war, war widows, reporters, and women who he doesn’t find attractive, but he’s good at cozying up with dictators like Rodrigo and Putin.
Twitter is over Trump’s self-congratulatory style.
