President Trump took to Twitter this Tuesday morning to address the recently passed government funding bill, a bill which did not include provisions for many of Trump’s key policy proposals, including the U.S.-Mexico border wall.

Congressional Republicans have faced backlash from far right Trump supporters over not including wall funding in the latest appropriations bill, with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan trying to convince people that the bill really does bolster border security in a way that’s appealing to the bigots who back Trump.

President Trump has now joined in on the conversation, but his approach is, yet again, quite different from Ryan’s.

Whereas Ryan is like the quintessential sellout, spineless politician who just wants to keep everyone happy, Trump has no such concern. Rather, he is determined to get his way, no matter what, even, apparently, if that means forcing a government shutdown over his demands for border wall funding.

Writing on Twitter Tuesday morning, Trump said:

‘The reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there! We either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good “shutdown” in September to fix mess!’

either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good “shutdown” in September to fix mess!

Trump’s reference to September comes from the fact that the just passed government funding bill takes care of government appropriations until that time.

The widely derided budget proposal that came out from the White House earlier this year will, if passed, apparently go into effect in October and cover the 2018 fiscal year.

There will, no doubt, be another round of intense budget negotiations come the fall.

@realDonaldTrump You’re reckless. Shutting down the government isn’t like closing a casino. The last government shutdown cost the economy ~$24B/0.6% GDP.

@realDonaldTrump @NatlParkService @USTravel …and while we’re at it: We cannot afford an increase in gas tax. These consumption taxes disproportionately affect low/middle income ppl.

It’s true that Trump is literally calling for an increase in gas tax. We remember when conservatives blamed Obama for gas price increases when that was not in his control, but now a Republican ‘president’ wants to deliberately raise the price of gas through a tax increase.

Twitter users were not amused by Trump’s reckless tweet.

@realDonaldTrump Wait. You put “shutdown” is quotes so according to Sean Spicer, you don’t really mean it.

@realDonaldTrump You want a 51% majority rule in Senate? That means 3 GOP has to go in 2018. So there will be 51 Dems in Senate. Got it. Ok we are on it!

@realDonaldTrump Maybe attempt to be a president for ALL the people and reach across the aisle for a bipartisan agreement like EVERY PRESIDENT BEFORE YOU.

@realDonaldTrump Republicans and democrats alike all have pre-existing conditions!

@realDonaldTrump Last week you were blaming democrats for shutting down the government…

@realDonaldTrump What’s a “good” shutdown? Because it sounds like it’d hurt a lot of Americans. You make light of real people’s live but simply do not care.

@realDonaldTrump You sound like a toddler throwing his trucks (we know you like them) out of his playpen because other kids are being mean. Grown the fuck up

@realDonaldTrump Well, now you’re at least being consistent with your earlier, positive views on government shutdowns https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/385502616337149952

Trump is more unpopular than any other president during their first 100 days in office. I wonder what he’s trying to distract us from this time (cough, cough, Russia).
