The Saudis have a lot of money, so Donald Trump has no problem with them. At least, that’s the impression that’s easily able to be garnered from the president’s public statements on the subject, including a Tuesday morning tweetstorm.

It’s true; during the president’s recent trip to the Middle East, while in Saudi Arabia, President Trump delivered a speech calling on Middle Eastern nations to do more to combat terrorism.

Sounds good, right? Well, that’s where Trump’s appearance of competence ceases.

To start with, the definition of terrorism varies from the United States to the Middle East. For instance, in Syria, the government routinely refers to those who have fought back against them in the ongoing civil war as terrorists. In 2014, Saudi Arabia passed a law that defines any activity that seeks “to insult the reputation of the state” as terrorism.

Thus, there’s a lot more to the story here than just a need for niceties from Trump. Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries have been fighting what they deem to be terrorism for some time — they just define it quite differently than we do.

It’s thus short sighted at best for Trump to presume that his speech had some sort of magical effect on the state of affairs in the Middle East.

The incident with Qatar that Trump is referring to is the recent decision on the part of Saudi Arabia and other countries allied with the monarchy to completely cut ties with Qatar on account of accusations that the latter supports “terrorism.”

The tensions leading up to this break have been building up for some time, with Qatar supporting Iran and the Saudis long seeing Iran as a threat to their power.

Trump, however, fell for the money bait and seems to think that the Saudis — who were literally complicit in 9/11 — have turned their whole state around just because he said to. While in Saudi Arabia recently, Trump signed the controversial largest arms deal that the U.S. has ever inked with any country ever. In defense of the deal, and in curious Bush-esque fashion, Trump cited its financial benefits to the American economy.

Trump continued this Tuesday on Twitter to show just how much he’s really fallen for the Saudis’ money driven machinations, claiming that the Saudis’ decision to lead an mass disconnection from Qatar could be the “beginning of the end of terrorism.”

He wrote:

‘So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off. They said they would take a hard line on funding extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!’

…extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!

How much does a tweet like this cost? Around $270,000.@WSJ today: Trump Hotel Received $270,000 From Lobbying Campaign Tied to Saudis. https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/872084870620520448

@realDonaldTrump QATAR??? THAT’S THE PUNCHLINE?

@realDonaldTrump Saudi Arabian princes literally send money directly to ISIS and your red herring is QATAR? Holy shit dude, that’s just insane, honestly.

@realDonaldTrump Your distraction in exchange for money is DANGEROUS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

@realDonaldTrump CUT OFF FUNDING TO SAUDI ARABIA = CUT OFF TERRORISM’S LARGEST SOURCE OF INCOME

@realDonaldTrump …yet Qatar was never on your Muslim travel Ban. You’re a funny one, Don.

During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology. Leaders pointed to Qatar – look!

@realDonaldTrump And then you sucked up to the Saudis, who are the ones doing most of the funding of radical ideology.

@MikeElgan @realDonaldTrump He wouldn’t even say his magic “radical Islamic terrorism” phrase while in Saudi Arabia. Definitely kissing ass.

@MikeElgan @realDonaldTrump The Saudis also spend whatever they can to export a radical ideology. Trump has no clue what he’s talking about.

During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology. Leaders pointed to Qatar – look!

@realDonaldTrump You attack Iran, which had 40 million Iranians voting to select a democratically elected leader who wants better ties with the West.

@realDonaldTrump Conflict of interest Donald. Deutsche Bank is funded by the Qatari’s, and your loans are underwritten by @DeutscheBankAG

@realDonaldTrump @DeutscheBankAG Qatari’s flushed in 25 billion to Deutsche Bank last year. Trumps debt to DB exceeds 350 million.

During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology. Leaders pointed to Qatar – look!

@realDonaldTrump The main funder of terrorism is Saudi Arabia. 15 of the terrorists in 9/11 were Saudi. Yet, you bowed to their king and danced with him.

How arrogant do you have to be to presume that you’ve sparked the “beginning of the end” of terrorism? Does Trump literally not know any Middle Eastern history?
