On Tuesday, President Donald Trump placed a call from the White House to the new Prime minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, to congratulate him on his “great victory.” The PM and President Trump discussed a wide range of topics, from Brexit to climate change, with members of the media present in the Oval Office.
The most uncomfortable part of the phone call came when President Trump singled out a female journalist, Caitriona Perry of RTE, saying to Varadkar “She has a nice smile on her face. So I bet she treats you well.” In video posted to Twitter by RTE, he also turns to Perry to ask her where she is from, asking her to come “come here, come here.” Trump also added, “we have all of this beautiful Irish press.”
While Perry seemed to take the comment in stride and can be heard laughing in the video clip of the exchange, Trump’s comment still raised a lot of eyebrows. Trump has been called out time and time again for the demeaning way he speaks to female reporters, and the way he objectifies women based on looks.

In the past, specifically during his campaign, he has had altercations with Megyn Kelly, who worked for Fox News at that point. He also singled out NBC News’ Katy Tur, often times referring to her as “Little Katy” during rallies for his campaign. Then, of course, there is the whole “Grab her by the…” debacle, just to prove how disgusting the president can be towards women.
Below is the video of part of the president’s interaction with Varadkar.
Many twitter users had similar reactions of disgust, and shame for the president, in response to the video posted by RTE.
