Trump was also angry at Spicer for being “too weak”
Early on in his presidency, Trump reportedly screamed at Spicer for his perceived weakness and also for wearing a light suit. During his first press conference, Spicer wore a light gray suit and insisted that Trump had the largest inauguration audience, “period.” Despite this strong backing of a factual inaccuracy, Trump still gave him an earful about the demeanor. And, of course, the hue of his suit.
This may explain why Spencer snapped at Ryan for asking how the White House can revamp its public image. “You’ve got Russia, you’ve got wiretapping, you’ve got other things going on,” she said.
Spicer clapped back, saying: “No, we don’t have that. You’ve got Russia. If the president puts Russian salad dressing on his salad tonight, somehow that’s a Russian connection.” After Ryan asked a follow-up question, Spicer also scolded her by saying, “Stop shaking your head.” He also insisted that Ryan would “have to take no for an answer.”
Scarborough was incredulous about the exchange. “How condescending can anybody be,” he said. “That was simply beyond the pale.”
That’s when guest Mike Barnicle chimed in to say Spicer has an “audience of one” to appease. Who knows how many times that fickle audience has chided Spicer?
