Clearwater, Florida – A burglar died en route to a hospital after the Clearwater couple in the home used a machete to fight back against him early Tuesday morning.

The house is on Terrace View Lane near Glen Oak Avenue which is right off of McMullen Booth Road.

Pinellas Sheriff’s deputies say around 2:11 a.m., Steven and Heather Aiosa woke up to find a man, later identified as Robert Alcalde, standing in the doorway of their bedroom. Detectives say that Alcalde began acting irrationally, trying to climb the walls of the bedroom.

Steven armed himself with a .22 caliber rifle and a machete. He and Heather retreated to the back of the home where they called 911. Steven then tried loading the rife but the rifle malfunctioned and was inoperable.

Detectives say that Alcalde followed Steven and Heather and violently attacked Heather. Steven grabbed his machete and struck Alcalde in the legs numerous times.

Deputies arrived, and found Alcalde holding the .22 caliber rifle, fighting with Steven. Deputies disarmed Alcalde of the rifle. In doing so, deputies deployed their Electronic Control Weapons striking Alcalde multiple times with little or no effect.

Detectives say that Alcalde continued physically resisting deputies despite suffering from significant leg injuries and considerable blood loss.

When paramedics arrived, Alcalde, 31, was transported to Northside Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Steven and Heather Aiosa were uninjured.

Detectives say the couple did not know Alcalde and that he is believed to have been impaired at the time of the incident.

Three different neighbors told 10News WTSP the couple had moved into the home just a few months ago.

Kayla, a neighbor who is also the mother of two young children, was too afraid to share her last name with us but says loud screams from the house woke her up around 2 in the morning.

“We just heard yelling. I heard a guy screaming first and then a girl screaming like bloody murder. To me for it to be a burglary – I wouldn’t hear screaming like that. I thought it was a domestic violence kind of situation going on and then all of a sudden the cops showed up.”
