Couple arrested after ‘little girl, 1, suffers stab wounds in serious sexual assault’ tried to pass it off as dog mauling

Isaac Andrew Cardenas, 23, and Crystal Herrera, 22, claimed the girl had been attacked by a dog after wandering outside

A couple have been arrested after a one-year-old girl suffered serious stabs wounds to “intimate” parts of her body, in a suspected horrific sexual assault.

Isaac Andrew Cardenas, 23, and Crystal Herrera, 22, claimed the child was attacked by a dog after wandering outside late at night.

They claimed her injuries were from dog bites when medical staff arrived at an address in San Antonio, Texas, USA, to treat her.

But they were arrested after police realised there were inconsistencies in their claims.

The little girl has “serious” and “life-threatening” injuries that are consistent with being sexually assaulted, police claim.

She also has multiple “non-accidental” stab wounds to her “intimate parts”.

Bexar County Sheriff Jeff Salazar said it was “one of the worst cases police have ever seen.”

He told WCEP-TV in San Antonio: “There’s just no other way – I can’t even begin to describe to you the level of depravity that went into this crime.”

He added: “I’ve got seasoned detectives and emergency room personnel that have all agreed that this is one of the worst cases they’ve ever seen, if not the worst case they’ve ever seen.

“There are certain cases that we carry with us, that make us lose sleep at night. This is one of those cases.”

Cardenas was charged with super aggravated sexual assault of a child, and faces a minimum 20-year sentence if convicted.

Meanwhile Herrera, who is reported to be related to the child, was charged with injury to a child and serious bodily injury by omission.
